What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that affect a person’s relationship with food, body image, and overall health. They can manifest in different ways, including:

  • Anorexia Nervosa: Restricting food intake, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: Binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors like purging, excessive exercise, or fasting.
  • Binge Eating Disorder: Frequent episodes of consuming large amounts of food, often accompanied by a lack of control and feelings of shame.
  • Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED): Disordered eating patterns that don’t fully meet the criteria for anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating but still cause significant distress and health concerns.

Eating disorders can affect individuals of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. If you're struggling with any of these issues, our team of professional counselors is here to provide the support you need to heal.

How Eating Disorder Counseling Can Help

Eating disorder counseling is designed to address the underlying emotional, psychological, and behavioral factors that contribute to disordered eating. Our approach is holistic and evidence-based, focusing on both the mind and body. Here's how counseling can support you:

  • Build a Healthier Relationship with Food: We work with you to challenge negative thoughts and unhealthy behaviors related to food, helping you develop balanced and mindful eating habits.
  • Improve Self-Esteem and Body Image: We provide a safe space to explore your body image concerns, helping you foster a more positive and compassionate view of yourself.
  • Address Underlying Issues: Many eating disorders are linked to emotional distress, trauma, anxiety, depression, or perfectionism. Our therapists help you identify and process these underlying issues to support long-term recovery.
  • Learn Coping Skills: Through counseling, you will gain healthy coping strategies for managing stress, emotions, and difficult situations without turning to disordered eating behaviors.
  • Support Long-Term Recovery: Our goal is to help you not just recover, but also sustain a healthier, more fulfilling life. Counseling provides ongoing support as you navigate the ups and downs of recovery, building resilience and strength.
